                Vietnam (1965-1972)

"The Black Scarf"

From the victorious battles in the past, the 1st Battalion 22nd Infantry emerged famously know as the "Regulars By God".  Now more than a century later in the Republic of Vietnam, this Battalion has adoped a new distinctive trademark, namely, "The Black Scarf".  It developed when a soldier recognized the desirability of clearly distinguishing the fights troops of this traditional infantry battalion.  It is proudly worn around the neck and affixed with a battalion insignia.  The color black is significant in several respects.  It affords our soldiers a subdued color tone not easily indentifiable in the wooded regions and jungles of the Central Highlands.  It is a constant reminder of the dark, uncertain future and unknown destiny which all soldiers must face in the defense of this nation's principles.  And foremost it is in mournful memory and recognition of our gallant, courageous comrades, "Regulars by God", who so valiantly fought and made the supreme sacrifice to preserve the cherished freedoms of our beloved country.  As we pridefully wear this "Black Scarf" about our necks, let us march on united as a fighting team, loyal and true to our commanders and our flag.  Let us augment our "Esprit de Corps" so that we may uphold the tradition of this battalion with "Deeds, Not Words"; let us hope and pray that our cause is Always just so that the Almighty God may countinue to bless the "Regulars" with the honor and Glory so bravely achieved in the Past.
