About 60 people gathered at Jackson-Silver Legion Post 68 in Locke Mills Sunday for a Veterans' Day observance. The Mahoosuc Community Band played patriotic songs and Post Commander Wayne Hakala gave the address. After the observance, a firing squad fired a salute outside as Legion member Al Lake prepared to dispose of hundred of old flags in the proper manner - by burning them.

Veterans park progress off to a fast start
By Gabrielle Martin CADILLAC — Chilly weather, clouds and rain didn't stop over 50 veterans and community members from coming together to help make progress on the new veterans park. Work on the park, located off of South 41 Road, is off to a great start, said Roger Bandeen, president of Veterans Serving Veterans, the group heading the project. "We're just blown away by the people coming out of the woodwork to help veterans in the Cadillac area," said Bandeen at a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday morning. The Veterans Serving Veterans Park will include a small lake, baseball and Frisbee fields, a Memorial Circle, guest cabins, a caretaker's home, log cabin chapel, pavilion overlooking a field of wild flowers and possibly an equestrian center. Over $50,000 in products and services have already been donated to the project, including the supplies for a large pole barn with office space. While England Pole Buildings in Marion and Dutchman Tree Farms have made large donations, the veterans park project even has donations coming from outside the state. Central States Manufacturing in Michigan City, Indiana, donated the steel posts for the pole barn on the condition that their employees can work side-by-side with the veterans to build the pole barn. "When we tackle projects, we want to make it personal," said Eric Navarro, business development manager for the company. Jeanne Whitney was one of the veterans present at the groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday. "It's nice to be acknowledged and honored," she said. "I think it's really nice of everybody to do something like this." |
